How can adaptability help us?
Recently Matt Rendell wrote an article for BBC Sport about Colombian para-cyclist Juan Jose Florian. Having been press-ganged into the Farc, Florian escaped to join his brother in the army. As a result, he was sent a parcel bomb, which left him as a triple amputee. Despite that, he has just become his country’s para-cycling champion.

Rendell quotes Florian as saying: ‘I want to show the world that you can fulfil your dreams. It’s not just about rehabilitation, it’s beyond that’.
Those inspiring words underline a key reason why raising our Adaptability Intelligence is a journey worth taking:
Whilst resilience helps us bounce back, adaptability enables us to bounce higher.
Change that would crush the spirits of most has driven Florian to become so much more than he was. He’s not just coping, and he didn’t just aspire to return to who and what he was before he picked up that parcel. He’s not only done things he would never have done before, he’s inspired others too.
Florian’s story gives us three takeaways here:
- You can learn to become more adaptable; your relationship with change is absolutely not fixed in stone.
- If you choose to adapt you may achieve things you never thought possible.
- You don’t have to suffer life-threatening injuries to find out 1) and 2).
