High Performance Change

A diagnosis of the High Performance Change Programme

As a practising GP in the UK’s National Health Service, Dr Mike Rampling spends most of his working life helping people deal with the fear and anxiety of change. So you’d think he’d be an expert at dealing with them himself. So did he.

‘Throughout my career I’ve read plenty on the theories about how anxiety works,’ says Mike, ‘but the course has helped me to a much better understanding of how it works in me. It describes the anatomy of fear and anxiety in an easily understandable way that I think many of my patients would benefit from, let alone myself’. He even goes so far as to say it has had a ‘profound’ effect on him.

‘I was a master procrastinator, driven by a self-destructive streak of perfectionism. But the course helped me realise that behind this unwanted behaviour was a constant worry about making the best decision. I now find myself just getting on with things more. For instance, we needed to re-mortgage, and I was able to choose a provider in under five minutes! Before, I would have faffed about, probably got a subscription to Re-mortgagers Monthly and worried about it for so long that I’d have missed the deadline to switch’.

Mike says he was shocked to discover on the course that whilst psychology has focused on studying negative emotions for over a hundred years, positive psychology only came to the fore in the 1990s. But it makes sense to him that the course combines both, first neutralising the negatives that make us resist change, before maximising the positive reasons to embrace it.

‘After all,’ he says, ‘you wouldn’t try to enjoy a relaxing game of boules on your lawn if it was still covered in the debris of the previous night’s party would you?’ Well, quite.

Mike reports that using the course’s antidotes to anxiety, he’s now able to interrogate any irrational negative thoughts and shoot them down as soon as they arise. That leaves him with ‘unfettered energy to focus on the good stuff’ as he puts it. Like helping his patients get through a bad day, for example.

So the big question is, was the course worth it? ‘Within a few days of doing the course,’ he says, ‘I noticed that my anxiety levels decreased significantly.' So has it changed his life? ‘Yes’, he replies, without any hint of procrastination.
