About
Leading change from day one
I’ve been leading change for over 25 years, in some of the world’s most innovative organisations. I’ve put myself through a fair bit of change in that time too – from Marketing to Manufacturing, Aberdeen to Auckland and Big Pharma to Agritech start-ups – on my journey from the shop floor to CEO. So I can say with some confidence that I’ve walked at least half a mile in the shoes of those I work with. At the start of my career I made a bee-line for supply chain because it was the quickest way to get leadership experience as it's a field that employs high numbers of people. It's also obsessed with productivity and requires increasingly disruptive change to stay competitive. I loved it all, and ended up running a billion-dollar global supply chain.
The hardest change of all
But having used all manner of process improvements – from automation to agile – I realised that, as powerful as they all are, the biggest productivity gains come from better leadership. More engaged staff result in more discretionary effort – which means they'll work harder and smarter voluntarily. I know all too well that the tricky bit in this equation is producing better leaders. Changing our own leadership behaviour is perhaps the hardest of all changes (and I've had to change mine plenty...). I realised that better leadership is underpinned by being more adaptable. Crack that, and becoming a better, eg delegator, then becomes a whole lot easier.
Change on purpose
The 'but wait, there's more' to this approach is that if you raise your Adaptability Intelligence, you're also ready for whatever happens next within and to your organisation.
In my experience, most people don't like change – leaders included. Which is why my purpose is to help people enjoy rather than endure the life of change that surely lies ahead for us all. And my experience tells me that the best way to do that is to develop better leaders.
Develop your leaders through adaptability so they can engage your people to drive your productivity.
